Quarterly Colour Focus: Here comes the sun… How to wear yellow

Ah, yellow – the brightest, sunshiny-est, happiest colour of them all! But it can be difficult to wear, leaving us looking washed out and very much the opposite of happy! Me and my cool skin tone have a slight fear of and fascination with yellow – it’s not something I wear often, but feel like I can get away with it in the summer when I have a bit of a tan! So, with so many shades of yellow on offer from daffodil through to mustard, how can you choose the one that is going to work for you and your colouring? Let’s take a look at ‘how to wear yellow’.

1. Check out your skin tone

I know, I know – I bang on about this a lot, but once you know your skin tone, it’s much easier to decide which shades of any colour are going to work best for you. I’m a firm believer that all colours can work for all skin tones – it’s just a matter of tweaking here and there!

As a very, very general rule, the warmer your skin tone, the warmer and brighter your yellow can be; the cooler you are, go for pastel or daffodil shades.

2. Pair it with a great neutral

Going lighter looks crisp and summery; going darker will make the yellow pop even more! For cooler skin tones, pale denim and muted tones look great with yellow. If you’re warmer and fancy making a statement, your yellows will look amazing with brights – pink, red, blue, green – take your pick!!

3. Embrace Athleisure

Yellow looks great as speed stripes! It looks like athleisure is a trend that’s here to stay, so why not tick off a couple of looks at once and pick a sporty T-shirt, hoodie or trackie bottoms with a couple of yellow stripes? Yellow hair to match is optional!! 🙂

4. Accessorise

As always, my top tip for wearing any new or bright colours is to try it as an accessory first – you never know, you might like it! Bags, shoes, scarves (although be careful with scarves as they sit right next to your face…) and obviously – bracelets (!) are a great way to introduce yellow into your outfits.

This bracelet is available on Chocolate Brown leather (best for warm skin) or Black leather (great for cool skin tones).
