Quarterly Colour Focus: The Leaves are Turning… How to Wear Orange

Well, I think it’s safe to say, “it’s here!”. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness – yes people, Autumn has most certainly arrived. Last week I looked at ways to update your wardrobe for Autumn, so this week I thought I would look at that perennial…Autumnal colour – Orange. The leaves are turning and we are wearing more of it, so here goes – Our Quarterly Colour Focus: How to Wear Orange.

Know your skin tone

I know I go on about this… a lot… but it’s worth saying again and again! We can all wear most colours – even orange – as long as we know which shades of those colours suit our skin tone. Reminder graphic below!

How to Wear Orange

I am a true ‘Winter’ when it comes to my colouring – pale blue eyes and dark hair – and if I’m 100% honest, I tend to stay away from orange and orange-based colours (coral, copper, peach, apricot – you get the picture!) unless I have a mega-watt tan! Luckily for me, I’m still sporting my left over bronzed look from the amazing summer we had and I’m off on my hols next week, so I can top up! If you are cooler, maybe don’t put the orange next to your face – add colour using shoes or other accessories – and go for something a little pinkier (like a watermelon colour)…

Get your denim on!!

Especially darker navy and indigo shades. Orange and blue are opposite each other on the colour wheel and form a complementary colour palette, which just works! Much like Red and Green in my blog on How to Wear Green.

Get creative – jeans are great, but so are denim skirts, jackets, bags – whatever you like!

And remember – double denim is ok – in fact it’s positively encouraged as long the denims are different shades. All mid blue? Too Shakin’ Stevens for me! But never say ‘never’!!

How to Wear Orange

As with everything, if you’re a bit scared of or uncertain about a particular colour, add little bits – one pop at a time – with some awesome accessories. Everything from bags to scarves; hats to shoes – just be careful of too much orange around your face if you’re a cooler skin tone. Otherwise – go nuts!!!! Orange is such a lively, vibrant colour, it can’t fail to make you and everyone around you happy!

Ditch the black

I remember years ago watching Trinny and Susannah terrorising some poor young woman in a clothes shop changing room, warning her never to wear bright colours with black. “It just looks cheap” they said. And do you know what? They were right. The contrast between black and very bright colours throws back to the 80s (neon yellow padded jumper and black leggings anyone?!”). Which is totally fine if that’s the look you’re going for… but other neutrals – grey, navy and chocolate brown lend brighter colours a little more sophistication. And who doesn’t want that?!
